Meretz UK has pledged that from 1st of October 2009 it will purchase Fairtrade products as much as practical. In particular this will include purchases of Fairtrade coffee, sugar, cocoa, some fruits and some juices. Meretz UK and its predecessors have always been associated with the fair treatment of labourers. The history of sugar and tea, coffee, bananas and some other products are strongly connected to the British histories of slavery, colonialism and neocolonialism. Where possible Meretz UK will try to support communities who are treated well and paid a fair wage, and hence distance itself from these legacies and set an example for those whose real lives are affected today.
