of peace, or just normal coexistence, has sadly remained just that – a

argued in a Jewish Chronicle op-ed, if
Benjamin Netanyahu and Mahmoud Abbas truly got to know each other and developed
the trust without which peace will never blossom.

essay that “peace is closer than you think” even if there are pitfalls. And he speaks
from personal experience. As the chief intermediary between Hamas and the
Israeli government, Baskin played a key role in achieving the release of Gilad
Schalit in late 2011, after years during which the young soldier languished in
a Gaza prison. Last year Baskin published his book “The Negotiator”, about the
hidden story of the Schalit and Palestinian prisoners swap. Likewise he advised
successive Israeli administrations on peace negotiations, officially and
unofficially, from Rabin to Barak and now to Netanyahu.

the Israel/Palestine Centre for Research and served as its co-director until
2012. Baskin is a compelling speaker who loves engaging with his audience. He
presents a rare peek into the necessarily secret world of top level diplomacy,
with all its high hopes and frequent disappointments. On Thursday he will focus
on the breaking news of the day – the Hamas/Fatah unity pact, the arduous task
of John Kerry, and the intricacies of cabinet debates and coalition politics in
Jerusalem... perhaps even the effect of the Syrian crisis ‘next door’. Not to be missed!

Since then the party has sadly lost some great personalities: Shulamit Aloni, who we cited in our last posting, and more recently the veteran former health minister, chair of Mapam and pioneering peacemaker, Victor Shem-Tov.

However, the intervening year or so has also seen Meretz score a number of landmark successes. As Bianca Ambrosio, operations manager of the World Union of Meretz, tells us, the party has legislated on many issues, fought a number of vital campaigns, accomplished numerous breakthroughs for ordinary citizens and increased in size. Meretz also bolstered Israel's oft-threatened democracy with petitions, and while it occasionally got frustrated it invariably persisted and fought back!
Meretz UK mourns the passing of Shulamit Aloni, a true leader of the Israeli left and someone who many members knew and loved. Aloni helped create Meretz out of Mapam and Ratz, and played a key role as cabinet minister in the 1993-5 Rabin administration. She was an outstanding campaigner for civil rights, peace, education, social justice and enhancing the role of women in Israeli society.
Shulamit Aloni: The great woman of the dreams

by Gideon Levy, Ha'aretz

Shulamit Aloni was the first lady of Israel, the first lady of the remains of its liberalism and openness. She took part in shaping the state, but was one of the few figures in its history to do so other than by means of rivers of blood. Not a celebrated general with a chestful of medals, not the “exterminator of terror,” neither conqueror nor settler, yet still an Israeli hero – a civilian hero, for a change.

She was controversial – Golda Meir despised her at the start of her career, Rabbi Ovadia Yosef at the end – but no one disputed her honesty, determination or courage. Here was a woman, an Israeli leader, the controversy around whom revolved not wars, but rather around civil rights, the separation of state and religion, minority rights and social justice, all of them rare issues in Israel.

Aloni was the founding mother of them all: She invented Israeli enlightenment. She was the first, inspiring others and pointing the way. She did not always succeed, knowing more than a few painful failures, and late in life she became more extreme, railing at many things that she herself had helped to create. I would needle her, “You built this all,” to which she would respond indignantly, “It didn’t turn out the way we planned.”

And still, many Israelis owe her their rights and their standing – consumers; gay, lesbian and transgender individuals; Arabs and Jews; men and, above all, women – and perhaps they are not aware of this.

We bonded over the occupation. We played tennis together at the Sonesta Hotel in occupied Taba, in the period when her husband, Reuven, was head of the Israeli occupation administration in Sinai. On the tennis court, a good place for discerning personal character, she was arrow-straight and devoid of the desire to win at any cost.

The Aloni I knew was not only a woman of principle, but also had a lust for life. One time, when we had a lunch date, she brought me to a Whitman ice-cream shop for “American waffles,” topped with mountains of ice cream, whipped cream and a Maraschino cherry. You only live once, she said at the time, and Aloni lived a full, rich life. She enjoyed art and culture, had a thing for designer clothing and drove a trendy red jeep – yet was still a warrior for justice.

Lacking any cynicism, Aloni quit government coalitions and positions when necessary and was one of the most humble, least egotistic politicians I have known. At a time when most of her colleagues – including the most righteous among them – worried about their reputations and receiving proper credit, Aloni cared only about the issues themselves.

She was the third angle of the triangle of Sonia and Shimon Peres at the Ben-Shemen Youth Village, sharing a tent with the couple – how their paths diverged since that time.

She was Israeli (and Zionist) to the bone, a great patriot. When we walked together one time through the alleys of Cairo, I begged her not to talk aloud in Hebrew – even then, it was dangerous for Israelis in Egypt – and she didn’t heed me, nearly shouting in Hebrew. When necessary, and even when not, Aloni always said what she thought, and thought what she said.

Now she has successors – one works for gay rights, another battles the occupation, while this one sees to women’s rights and that one to minority rights, one fights the religious establishment and another champions freedom of expression – but not one of them encompasses what she encompassed. One brave woman flying so very many flags. Perhaps that is the reason the Zionist left that remains is a weak, stuttering, apologetic left.

She was the great woman of the dreams, in the title of the Yehoshua Kenaz novel: the dream of an egalitarian, secular, democratic and just society.

She was the great woman of the disappointment: Most of her dreams did not come true. Israel became a worse place – racist, ultranationalist, occupying, theocratic and bullying, its democracy and equality in tatters.

Precisely the opposite of everything she preached. Was she ahead of her time? Absolutely not. She came at exactly the right time, but perhaps she left too soon. It’s Israel that drew back from her, and with horrifying steps.
The Jews of Sudan - The Longest Kiss in History

Where the Blue and the White Nile meet is known as the longest kiss in history. This is where the story of the Jews in the Sudan starts with eight Jewish families living under Egyptian-Turkish rule before 1880. In 1977 a group of Jewish people, having fled persecution in the Sudan during the 60’s, organized a highly secret mission to transfer the buried remains in the Jewish cemetery and the Torah Scrolls from Khartoum to Jerusalem.

This film reveals the unusual journey of the sacred books from the Sudan to show how this most enigmatic community has kept its identity. In Frederique Cifuentes Morgan's outstanding film we witness history told by those that experienced it at firsthand. Jews of Sudan chronicles life under the Mahdi, the effect of British imperialism on the community and the eventual exile and deliberate obliteration of all signs of Judaism in the Sudan.
Meretz UK is proud to announce a fascinating, informative and entertaining illustrated talk by Nabil al-Haidari, London-based Iraqi-born academic and researcher on interfaith dialogue, Islam and the Middle East.

Nabil is currently writing a book on Jewish Iraqi history. Drawing on his profound knowledge, his presentation shares vignettes from the Babylonian captivity and tales of Queen Esther, to the writing of the Talmud, the heyday of Abbasid Baghdad and the 20th century, when Jews enlivened Iraqi cultural life, especially music, and served as finance ministers and other high positions.

Two tales of courage…

It takes chutzpah to chide the head of your country on a matter of principle – and determination to change his mind! Yet such was the case when Iraqi President Jalal Talabani invited Nabil al-Haidari to address an interfaith conference in Sulaymaniyyah, Iraqi Kurdistan, on 21-22 November 2012.

At that conference Nabil decried the absence of Jews from the proceedings and courageously insisted that
participants acknowledge the Jewish role in Iraqi history. He also made three bold proposals:

Adding Judaism as a recognised religion within the Iraqi constitution.

Granting parliamentary seats to Jewish minority in line with other religions of Iraq.

Returning Jews’ money and properties sequestered or confiscated by previous Iraqi governments.

To his pleasant surprise the president accepted his pleas and conference adopted all three statements in its
closing declaration. Since then Nabil has written in several British papers about these issues.

Iraqi Jews trace their roots back 3,000 years and constitute one of the world's oldest and most historically
significant Jewish communities. Using pictures of nobles, monarchs, rabbis, humble workers and even a beauty queen, Nabil will show how Jews contributed immeasurably to the fabric of Babylonian, Mesopotamian, Ottoman and 20th century Iraqi society.

Despite their sad mass departure from Iraq around 1949, Iraq’s Jews have since spread to Israel, London, Paris, New York and even Singapore, maintaining traditions that Nabil, who has been invited to lecture in 40 countries, vividly brings to life.
But who could have imagined what it finds there? Unknown to most of the world, across Nigeria there are dozens of village synagogues, maintained by a handful of passionate, committed Igbos, who believe that they are descendants of Jews who had migrated to western Africa, fleeing the destruction of the 1st and 2nd Temples in Jerusalem. With precious few resources they continue to fulfill their historical legacy as Jews.

RE-EMERGING traces a fierce spirit of independence in the Igbos from Biblical times through rebellions during the slave trade and the brutal 1960s Biafran War (which killed over one million Igbos) to the rediscovery of Judaism today. The luminous individuals featured in the film powerfully demonstrate the Igbo's resilience as well as their firm commitment to Judaism.

Samuel Chukwuma aka Shmuel Tikvah is a young man whose story exemplifies the turn toward Judaism. Today, Shmuel is a leader in his community who teaches and chants Torah and dreams of one day becoming a rabbi. But like almost every Igbo, this gentle and committed spirit grew up in the aftermath of Christian colonialism, and the road to his discoveries has been fraught with antagonisms and misunderstanding, wrong turns into Messianic worship, exile from his family, violent prejudice from both Muslim and Christian neighbours, indifference from Jews he has contacted in the Western world, and a dispiriting lack of funds to further his education beyond what he can discover on the internet. Yet, his has also been a profound recognition of the beauty and inspiration of Judaism in the embrace of his Jewish community.

There is one thread of connection between Shmuel and the Diaspora. Shmuel was discovered by an American Rabbi, Howard D. Gorin, who, since 2001, has been invited to participate in the education and conversion of Native Africans with Jewish aspirations. With generous love and single-minded dedication, Rabbi Gorin has volunteered to work with Shmuel and others to see their dreams become reality. Recently retired, Rabbi Gorin's former congregation, Tikvat Israel, in Rockville, Maryland, has shipped two 40' containers to Africa; their contents included Jewish books, computers and an assortment of items ranging from
crutches, walkers, bicycles, housewares, and recycled clothing to boxes of matzos.

The film is causing a stir for many African-Americans interested in determining their genetic and ancestral background. With the help of American historians, the film sheds new light on the origins of hundreds of thousands of African slaves brought to American shores--a large number of whom were Igbo. The film breaks new ground by uncovering a previously unknown letter from 1803 that confirms a legend that Igbo slaves revolted in the waters off of St. Simon's Island, GA at a site still known today as "Igbo Landing". The film also establishes that several prominent African-Americans such as actors Forrest Whitaker and Blair Underwood, and Bishop T.D. Jakes have discovered an Igbo DNA connection, and further, that in areas like the state of Virginia, 60% of African slaves were Igbo.

RE-EMERGING is the first independent film for Director, Jeff L. Lieberman. Lieberman is a Journalist and Producer in New York, whose work has been seen on CBS, HBO, CNN, FOX, Starz Encore, Fox Movie Channel, The Discovery Channel, E! Entertainment, and on the websites of Yahoo!, The New York Post, CBS Moneywatch, and The Huffington Post.

After his career is destroyed by a sex scandal, Dov Chizzik is given a last chance, to review a Ministerial report into the 13 deaths of Israeli Arabs in riots in October 2000. He insists on investigating further and comes face to face with the realities of life for Israel's Arab community. For Dov, the consequences are life-changing.
He served as an officer in the Israel Defence Forces in the West Bank, was shot at during riots, and witnessed an assassination of a Palestinian leader suspected of collaborating with the Israelis. Paul has appeared on BBC World TV and Radio, on Israel Radio and on many UK national and local radio programmes commenting on the Israel-Palestine conflict.

He has addressed the Oxford University Union where he defeated a One State Solution motion and has spoken at many conferences in the UK and Europe. He writes and blogs about both the conflict and Jewish-Arab relations inside Israel, most recentlyfor Open Zion on the Daily Beast . Paul describes himself as a 'moderate critical Zionist'. He has spent the last ten years as a peace activist and was for many years chair of British Friends of Peace Now.
Comments on Them Not Us

One commentator on Amazon wrote that Them-Not Us is "a political thriller inspired by actual events, an unique view of the troubled relationship between Israel’s Arab and Jewish citizens in an

ever changing society. This is a book about big themes, with the Israeli/Palestinian conflict at its heart, yet the focus is very much on a small, human scale drama with which one can identify and sympathise. Readers [are allowed to] see through the thoughts of the main protagonists the ingrained prejudices that exist between Israeli Jews and Palestinians, which perhaps make for the biggest obstacle to a peace settlement."

Others have said of Paul's book:

"His is a fresh new voice and I hope that we will hear much more from him."

"I relished in the subtle combination of reality and fiction welded into the plot."

"This book deserves attention because it deals with the complexities of Israeli/Palestinian life and relationships in a way which makes it interesting and challenging."

"It is definitely a good book for making you think and challenging stereotypes and it is refreshing to have a human viewpoint of the politics which many of us hear so much about in the newspapers."

"The story and the characters were very well well developed and expressed. It is clear that the author writes from a deep knowledge and understanding of both the landscapes and the diverse people who live in Israel/Palestine. I found the passages told from the Palestinian viewpoint to be even more powerful and interesting than the ones from the Israeli view... I found myself really looking forward to getting back to the book and reading the next section.

More about book

Israeli governments have for many years maintained a consensus concerning the need for the nation’s citizens to serve in the army. This consensus was based on the ethos of a Jewish state surrounded by Arabs who want to destroy it. The Iranian nuclear program is the most recent of the many threats to the Israeli state.

But for some time Israel’s black and white view of itself has been eroding. Conscientious objection to conscription and ‘draft dodging’ as well as the rights and wrongs of occupation and settlements have become explosive issues for all shades of Israel’s political spectrum. Can we expect young Israelis, who are called to serve their country at eighteen, to have the maturity to weigh such complex issues? Does Israeli society really want them to?

For this stimulating book, David Ranan held interviews with Israelis aged between eighteen and thirty. The twenty-seven monologues presented here reveal some of the difficult moral questions that concern this generation. First published in German in 2011, this English-language edition contains a comprehensive introduction to Israel’s history that has been revised and updated to maintain its relevance.
Gradually losing his Zionist ardour he became a leading critic of Israel’s political direction. Lerman also criticised what he saw as the Jewish community's increasingly shrill sense of victimhood, and clashed with the Jewish establishment.
We are delighted to host at Hashomer House When Abel met Cain, a gripping and intense performance of myth, wonder and real life stories. Taking as its point of departure the famous Biblical account of the world's first murder, this storytelling and musical journey vividly brings viewers up to the present day with a portrayal of conflict worldwide, and a particular focus on the Israel/Palestine dispute.

The show blends everyday tales with myth, acting with music, the universal with the particular. A success at the Edinburgh Festival and later performed in various venues in London, When Abel met Cain features two extraordinary actors and performers, Raphael Rodan (from Israel) and Anastasios Sarakatsanos (from Greece). In their quest, storyteller and musician join powers to probe the darker side of human psyche and find light. The audience is guided through cobblestone paths, paved with memories, loves, fears, melodies, turbulent battles, tenderness, and laughter that stretches from despair to redemption.

Simply put, the tundra, blizzard and snowstorm conditions has made it well nigh impossible for most people to get there.
We are very sorry about this and hope to reschedule the meeting.
Naturally they hope that the left will do equally well in Israel's coming 22 January 1913 elections. So predicts Meretz leader, Zahava Gal-On.

Equally naturally, the make-up of US voters generally, and US Jewish voters specifically, differs markedly from the Israeli electorate. Some 69% of American Jews plumped for the Democrats and Barack Obama - down from about 78% in 2008 but still a lot! One of the strongest statements in favour of Obama came from Rabbi Sharon Brous of LA. American Jews constitute a multi-issue voting bloc; and Israel, said one recent poll, was only decisive for 4% of them. By contrast with USA-based Jews, American Jews in Israel supported Republican Mitt Romney by fully 85%.

So back to Israel and Meretz. What is the party doing in the run-up to polling day? For one thing, Meretz has started firing broadsides against the weird new Frankenstein's monster that has resulted from the electoral merger of Likud and Yisrael Beiteinu. Lieberman, Beiteinu leader, is the "Israeli Putin", warns the Meretz PR campaign Not everyone in Likud is happy with the merger either, it seems. Nonetheless, the fusion has been approved and Israel's political landscape has suddenly altered.

Meretz convention, Tel Aviv, 2011 - photo: Nir Kafri, Haaretz

Meretz's own appearance may also change after primary elections set for 11 November (this coming Sunday). It is good to hear of the possible return of former MK Avshalom Vilan, as well as Mossi Raz, who gave such a brilliant speech to Meretz UK not long ago. Regrettably Meretz has had problems meeting the wishes of important Arab supporters. Recent news suggests a 7th place slot for the impressive Isawi Farij from Kafr Qassem. But if Meretz maintains its current tally of just three MKs after 22 January, neither he nor three other top figures will make it to the Knesset.

Clearly the more MKs are elected, the greater the variety Meretz can show on their list, and the happier everyone will be! Realistically, Meretz has a mountain to climb to bring in newer votes. All that said, optimism is riding high. Maybe the party can promote a clear programme based on peace and social justice. Then they can convince voters that they present an alternative to the failed policies of existing parties and the ethereal promises of newfangled entities. More to follow!
A big thank you to Carol Gould for her excellent talk at Meretz UK last Sunday, two days before the US presidential elections.

Well, now we know who won - and Meretz UK for one is mightily relieved! Virtually all the many topics Carol raised loomed large on the actual day.

We are so grateful for her insights into that exciting process, an exercise in democracy that affects all of us. Carol made the complexities intelligible and her anecdotes were both informative and a joy to hear. Hope you find time to catch your breath, Carol, because the post-election broadcast analyses seem as torrid as the actual campaign!

Lastly, see our next item on Meretz and the coming elections in Israel - which starts with some interesting items on Jewish voters and the recent US presidential poll.

For instance, while Likud, Kadima, Labour and Foreign Minister Lieberman's own Yisrael Beiteinu Party have done precious little beyond words to foster talks with Palestinians, Meretz leader Zehava Gal-On held a face-to-face meeting with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas.

Similarly, while Labour boycotted the Socialist International meeting in South Africa - even chiding Colette Avital for wishing to travel there on her own steam - Meretz was determined not to see Israel adopt a futile "empty chair" approach. The party thus sent former MK Avshalom Vilan to Cape Town as the sole Israel voice there; and, while not denying that Israel suffers a surfeit of racist violence, he succeeded in blocking a motion that would have deemed Israel to be an "apartheid state".
